Kaiona
Kaiona The Kia'i
"A Journey into the Unknown" is an educational book co-authored by Gabriel Yanagihara and two coworkers to teach students about tsunami safety through the HIEMA FEMA framework. Illustrated with AI tools and supported by ChatGPT's guidance on self-publishing, this project represents a pioneering effort in integrating emerging technologies into education. Gabriel has leveraged this experience to train over 500 teachers in Hawaii, empowering them to help students create and publish their own stories, which are then donated to schools and local libraries. These stories, including "Kaiona," will be AI-translated into 15 languages and shared globally for free.
The narrative follows Kaiona, a young surfer who encounters Namaka, the Hawaiian goddess of the sea, and her guardian dog, Moela, after a fall from her surfboard. Namaka teaches Kaiona about the ocean's beauty and dangers, gifting her a shell necklace as a reminder. When Kaiona tries to warn her family and village about an impending tsunami, her warnings are initially dismissed. However, with the support of her grandfather, she leads her community to safety, earning their gratitude for her wisdom and courage. Through Kaiona's story, students learn valuable lessons about ocean safety and the importance of preparedness.
